Rāmāyaṇa Teaser: The Chart Doesn't Lie

Money will be made. But slowly. And critics won't be kind.

That's the short answer. The business analyst in me was pulled in by a producer making a 4,000 crore claim that is orders of magnitude beyond average Bollywood earnings. So I did what I always do: I looked at the chart.
Two Events, One Chart
The teaser launch had an unusual duality. There were two separate unveilings - one in Los Angeles, and one in India on Hanuman Jayanti, which also served as the official YouTube launch. The India event was the more public moment. The LA event was earlier but for a much smaller audience.

Here's what stopped me in my tracks: both Rashi charts are identical. The Navamsha are different, which is where the nuance lives - but this is the kind of challenge that makes Jyotish interesting.
I used the Ruling Planets technique from KP Astrology to confirm which moment to anchor to. Second hint came from the fact that the LA chart's Maha Dasha is Surya. That settled it. Rāma is the Vishnu avatāra of Surya. The cosmos, apparently, is not subtle. We use the LA chart.

What the Lagna Tells Us
Lagna is Vrishabha. This is the Kālapurusha house of family in its universal sense, it points to a global audience. This is not a film being made for the lanes of Banaras. It is being made for the diaspora and for international markets.
Lagnesha is Shukra, placed in a temporal friend's rashi in the 12th bhāva. This one placement tells us three things cleanly:
Foreign markets are the primary focus (12th bhāva). Confirmed.
The obsession with virtual world-building and visual beauty (12th bhāva). The producer runs a digital studio of considerable reputation, so this is no surprise.
This is a financier-driven project. The money is in the driver's seat. The industry already knows this; the chart simply confirms it.
Shukra in the 12th is not uncomfortable, Shukra actually likes that bhāva as it is its natural bhāva of exaltation. So points 1 and 2 will see moderate, earnest success. The visuals will be genuinely impressive. The overseas push will find traction. But "moderate" is not 4,000 crores.
The Image Problem
For any film's commercial opening, the Arudha Lagna is where you look. This is the image the world sees.
At the Arudha, we have a Shani-Surya yuti. This is not a radiant placement. Given that Ranbeer Kapoor (the lead actor) has a well-documented history of comments about being a big beef guy (comments that sit uneasily with the obvious devotional audience for a Rāma film) this is exactly what you'd expect. The image is complicated. Shani is a Rājayogakāraka for this chart, and the placement isn't disastrous, but it is not shining either.
The 11th lord sits in the 2nd, and I'll note that both the US and India launch timings were selected with at least basic Jyotish awareness. Someone was paying attention to auspiciousness. The 9th lord of Faith is placed in the 11th: income will come from the traditional, Shani-minded public. That audience will show up, because Rāma is Rāma. But they will not show up without reservation.
Amatyakāraka Bṛhaspati in the 2nd bhāva confirms a Jyotishi was in the room for the planning. (They should have asked that Jyotishi to also review the script.)
On the Claim of 5,000 Years
I personally found the tagline "He is the answer" underwhelming. But the real letdown was the claim that this story is 5,000 years old. This is a common misconception, unfortunately spread because many educated Hindus have not done the math on Yuga cycles. The scripture leaves no ambiguity about the date. None. With a budget of this scale, someone could have spent a few hours with the texts.
It leaves little doubt about what the rest of the film's scriptural rigour will look like. The visual experience will be extraordinary - I have no doubt. The music gives grounds for real hope, and I will revisit both of those when the time comes. But the research? The film is likely to disappoint the purists (again: Shani with Surya in the Arudha).
How Will Critics Receive It?
For this, the Moon is where we look - the minister of the public mind.
The Moon is in Sandhi in the Rashi chart. In the Navamsha, it occupies Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna. This film will not find lasting critical acclaim. Initial reviews will be mixed, the spectacle will buy goodwill but over time. The reception will not be warm. What begins as wonder will not sustain.
Is there a Remedy?
For me this is where butter meets toast. But due to the fact I have a big heart (and certainly not due to the fact that I have no access to the makers of this movie), I will give it away for free.
Hold special premier for the poor who can't afford it before the global launch. This will be a solid attempt to satisfy the drying vayu tattva sitting in the 11th with the Arudha lagna.
The Summary
The chart is consistent. The money will come in - but gradually, and the 4,000 crore target is ambitious to the point of being aspirational. The overseas markets and the diaspora will carry it further than domestic critics will. The visuals and music will be the genuine strengths. The image of the lead remains the single biggest risk to the opening.
This is a beautiful production built on a poorly researched foundation, financed by people chasing global scale, confirmed by a chart that has no great surprises.
Rāma's story is eternal. It will outlast this film, as it has outlasted all previous ones.
ॐ आपदामपहर्तारं दातारं सर्वसम्पदाम् । लोकाभिरामं श्रीरामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहम् ॥
Oṃ āpadām-apaharttāraṃ dātāraṃ sarva-sampadām | Lokābhirāmaṃ Śrī Rāmaṃ bhūyo bhūyo namāmyaham ||
Om, I bow again and again to Śrī Rāma, the remover of calamities and the bestower of all prosperity, who delights all the worlds.
May Prabhu Rāma bless this effort with the viveka it might lack.
